The well-known Stadsfeestzaal, is the hidden gem of the Meir. Built in 1908, this large sumptuous hall was an immediate success. It was used as a permanent site for all official festivities and hosted important statesmen such as the country's king. During a Christmas market in 2000, a fire destroyed the hall, leaving only an iron skeleton. The hall was beautifully renovated, lots of elements have been preserved and restored to their former glory. It reopened in 2007, and since then it is a modern shopping gallery housing over 50 stores.
Even if some are not interested in shopping, this historic building is definitely worth a visit. Admire the impressive architecture, an impressive glass-iron vault, a large marble staircase and mosaic floor and gilded gold decoration on the ceiling.
